Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, is a popular tourist destination known for its rich culture, history, and stunning architecture. Visitors to Kathmandu can explore temples and shrines, take in the bustling streets and local markets, and experience the unique customs and traditions of the Nepalese people.
The city is also a great base for trekking and other adventure activities in the surrounding mountains. Overall, Kathmandu offers something for everyone and is a fascinating destination for travelers looking to experience the rich culture and history of Nepal.
In this article, I will share my experiences in Kathmandu and 10 things you must not miss when you are exploring Kathmandu.
1. Swayambhunath Stupa
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Kathmandu is the Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the “Monkey Temple.”
This Buddhist temple is located on a hilltop west of the city and is said to be over 2,500 years old.
It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it features a large stupa which is a dome-shaped structure, that is adorned with colorful prayer flags and intricate carvings. Visitors can climb the 365 steps to the top of the temple for a panoramic view of the city. Trust me, This is where you get the best view of the city!
2. Boudhanath Stupa
The Boudhanath Stupa is another popular Buddhist temple in Kathmandu. This large stupa is said to be one of the largest in the world and features unique intricate carvings and colorful prayer flags.
Visitors can walk around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and offering prayers. The area around the stupa is also home to many shops and restaurants selling traditional Tibetan food and souvenirs.
3. Durbar Square
For those interested in history and culture, the Kathmandu Durbar Square is a must-visit. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features the palace complex of the former Nepalese royalty and is home to many temples and shrines.
Visitors can see the famous Kumari Temple, which houses the living goddess Kumari, and the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, which served as the royal residence until the 19th century.
4. Pashupathinath Temple
Another must-see attraction in Kathmandu is the Pashupatinath Temple. This Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Pashupatinath, the patron deity of Nepal, and is considered one of the most important temples in the world for Hindus.
The temple complex is located on the banks of the Bagmati River, and visitors can watch the cremation ceremonies that take place along the river.
Unfortunately, Photography and Videography is strictly prohibited within Pashupathinath Temple.
5. Nagarkot
It is a day hike to Nagarkot, One of the most popular hill station in Nepal, which is 32 km from Kathmandu. It offers an incredible panoramic view of the Himalayas and a picturesque sunrise and sunset view.
6. Thamel
Take a stroll through the bustling streets of Thamel. This is the main tourist area of Kathmandu and is packed with shops, restaurants, and cafes. You can find everything from traditional handicrafts to modern souvenirs here.
I got my hotel booked in Thamel while I was exploring Kathmandu as Thamel is one of the most happening places in Nepal and good for every traveler’s taste.
7. Bhaktapur
Explore the ancient city of Bhaktapur. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located just a short drive from Kathmandu. Here you can see traditional Newari architecture and visit the many temples and palaces that are located throughout the city.
Do not miss out trying JuJu Dhau (Delicious thick curd) when you are In Bhaktapur.
8. Chandragiri Hills
Chandragiri Hills is a popular tourist destination located just on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal. At an elevation of 2,551 meters (8,372 feet) above sea level, Chandragiri offers a spectacular view from the top.
Known for its stunning views of the Himalayas and the Kathmandu Valley, Chandragiri Hills offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Cable car that takes to the top of hill where you can visit a beautiful chandragiri hill and also the panaromic view of the hills. 9. Budhanilkantha
Budhanilkantha is an important religious site in Nepal, known for its beautiful and intricately carved stone statue of the Hindu god Vishnu. The temple complex is a popular destination for devotees and visitors alike, who come to admire the statue and the peaceful atmosphere of the complex.
Budhanilkantha, also known as the “Blue Throat” or “Sleeping Vishnu,” is a temple complex located in the Budhanilkantha municipality in Kathmandu, Nepal. The main attraction of the complex is a large stone statue of the Hindu god Vishnu, reclining on a bed of snakes.
The statue is made of a single block of black basalt stone and is considered one of the most beautiful and stunning pieces of stone sculpture in Nepal.
The statue is approximately 5 meters long and is carved in the “Ananta-Sayana” pose, in which Vishnu is shown reclining on the coils of the cosmic serpent Ananta, with his head resting on a pillow and his four arms holding traditional attributes. The statue is also known as “Budha-Vishnu,” as it depicts a peaceful and meditative aspect of the god.
The temple complex also contains several smaller shrines and statues of other Hindu deities, including Sri Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Sri Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Vishnu. Additionally, there is a large pond within the complex, known as “Narayan Sarovar,” which is believed to have healing powers and is used for ritual ablutions by devotees.
10. Garden of Dreams
The Garden of Dreams ,also known as the “Kaiser Mahal Riwasa” is situated in the heart of Kathmandu, just east of the popular tourist destination of Thamel. The garden covers an area of 6.5 acres and features a variety of different sections, including a flower garden, a sunken garden, and a herb garden. The garden also includes several pavilions, which were used as rest areas for the royal family and as a venue for small gatherings and events.
One of the main attractions of the Garden of Dreams is the central pond, which is surrounded by a number of statues and sculptures, including a statue of the Greek god Pan. The pond is also home to a variety of fish, including goldfish and koi, which can be seen swimming in the water.
